Un comunicado de la agencia Reuters confirma la muerte de Jerry Wexler una leyenda de la industria discografica, pionero de la música “Rhythm and Blues” y quien ayudó a convertir a Atlantic Records en un sello de renombre con la llegada de artistas como Led Zeppelín, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, The Drifters, entre otros.
Wexler nació en el Bronx, Nueva York, en enero de 1917 y luchó en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Después del conflicto, trabajó como periodista en la revista Billboard, donde acuñó el término “Rhythm and Blues.” Se le considera el creador del termino.
El rhythm and blues, conocido también como “Música negra norteamericana” es un género musical derivado en su origen del jazz, el gospel y el blues. El término musical fué introducido en Estados Unidos en 1949 por Jerry Wexler cuando sustituyó al término conocido como “Race Records” (grabaciones de raza) y la categoria Harlem Hit de la publicación Billboard por RHYTHUM AND BLUES, esto sonaba menos ofensivo para una sociedad que traia a sus espaldas la posguerra mundial. El Rhythm and blues fue la antesala de varios generos musicales entre ellos sin duda el Rock and roll.
Wexler, fue incluido en el Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll en 1987. Falleció este 15 de agosto en Florida USA a los 91 años.
